I was curious how the comprehensive process of evaluating dental patients would pan out in a rural community. I joined the program Healthcare Alternative Spring Break, which allowed me to shadow and live with a rural dentist for a week. Due to a lack of water fluoridation as well as a lower emphasis on proper nutrition in the area; Dr. Ferch had a high incidence of patients with cavities. This required him to be responsible for educating his patients on the risks of continued poor oral habits. When it came to the clinical procedure he always felt compelled to only suggest the treatment he thought was best. However, he told me he made sure to inform the patient of all their options, because what he thought was best may not be appropriate for the patient’s finances, lifestyle or personal desires. The trip allowed me to see the opportunity to help those in my community who are not fortunate enough to be informed of basic oral health knowledge.
The following year I applied to be a Team Leader and plan my own trip to a different location. And even after that I spent my last year at the University on the Executive Board as Team Leader coordinator. It's been so great experiencing all aspects of the organization and being able to contribute to its success.
