What am i doing...
Yeah... being halfway done and starting junior year I got hit with the pressure of actually needing to figure out my future plans and back up plans. At this point I thought I was done with those introductory/weed out classes... boy was I wrong. I still spent a majority of my third year taking the Physics and Biochem series and all I really wanted to do was get to the upper division courses and learning about more specific topics that I cared about.
I figured out early when trying out classes to determine which major to commit to that microbiology was just not my thing. It seems that every year there's that one subject that I find really interesting and I find out all too harshly that I'm not very good at it. So I dropped the micro major and finally decided to be Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, with a Minor in Dance. I remember entering UW with my dream of being a Neurobiology major and if not that then Biochemistry and if not that then Microbiology, because I wanted to say that I got into a hard major with lots of restrictions and an application process. I never even considered biology because I thought it wasn't elite enough. What I came to realize however was that Neurobio was extremely competitive and once in the major I'd be competing with even more intense pre-health students, the Biochem department was impersonal and unhelpful, microbiology's grading never made sense to me, so what was left? The Biology Department has always been so caring and understanding and even in sophomore year those were the classes I did best in. Not to mention all the upper level biology courses range from one fascinating topic to another. I opted for a major that maybe had less restrictions but provided me with everything I needed for a successful undergraduate career.
I worked really hard my junior year, and I wasn't always happy with my grades but I was busy, in a good way and I loved it. With my major set and my DAT's finished I just had to get my letters of recommendation and decided if I was going to apply at the end of the year...
